“Will this get my account banned?” is the first question every creator asks about DM automation. The short answer: automation built on the official Instagram Graph API is explicitly supported by Meta. The longer answer — what's allowed, what's risky, and what's flat-out bannable — is worth five minutes of your time.

The foundation: official API vs. bots

Meta provides a formal Messaging API through the Instagram Graph API precisely so businesses can automate conversations. Tools built on it (ReplyKar included) require OAuth authorization, respect Meta's rate limits, and operate inside platform policy. Browser extensions and “bot farms” that simulate human typing violate Meta's Terms of Use from the first click — those are the horror stories you've heard about.

What's explicitly allowed

  • Sending automated DMs to users who comment on your content (comment-to-DM)
  • Automating replies to story reactions and story text replies
  • Using saved templates with personalization variables like first names
  • Sending follow-up messages to people already in an active conversation with you
  • Including links, discount codes, and files in your automated messages

What's restricted or risky

  • Messaging people who never engaged with your content (cold DM blasts)
  • Exceeding Meta's messaging rate limits — quality tools throttle this for you
  • Deceptive keywords or messages that misrepresent what the user will receive
  • Automated mass comments, follows, or likes (engagement pods and bot behavior)
  • Scraping emails or phone numbers from profiles for outreach

Rate limits, in plain English

Meta caps how many new conversations an account can start per day, scaled to account age and health. You don't need to memorize numbers — you need a tool that respects the caps automatically. ReplyKar queues overflow rather than pushing past limits, which is why long-running accounts stay healthy. Manual “power users” who hammer DMs with copy-paste scripts hit limits far harder than well-configured automations.

A commenter who types your keyword has raised their hand — that's the consent basis for your DM. Best practice (and ReplyKar default) is a one-tap opt-out in your template, plus automatic honoring of anyone who blocks or restricts you. Instagram also lets users limit who can DM them; those settings are always respected and can't be bypassed by any compliant tool.

The 2025 compliance checklist

  1. 1Use a tool built on the official Instagram Graph API (OAuth, never passwords)
  2. 2Only message users who engaged with your content first
  3. 3Keep message content honest — deliver exactly what the CTA promised
  4. 4Include opt-out language and respect it immediately
  5. 5Review Meta's messaging policies quarterly; they evolve
